Hope and Sufferance — Cable
Limited Edition Vinyl LP

Hope and Sufferance is an album about the space between optimism and disappointment — love, regret, frustration, resilience and the occasional refusal to take any of it too seriously.

Built around songs first written on acoustic guitar, the record expands into a rich, organic mix of rock, folk, blues, gospel and classic singer-songwriter influences. Acoustic and electric guitars, 12-string, piano, Hammond organ, mandolin, harmonica and percussion sit alongside full-band arrangements, harmony vocals and some gloriously unapologetic guitar playing.

The album was deliberately made to feel like a record, rather than a collection of digitally perfected tracks. Performances were captured in houses, rehearsal spaces, a conservatory and studios over a number of years, giving Hope and Sufferance an unusually human character. You can hear the rooms, the musicians and the performances rather than everything being polished into uniformity.

Produced by Neil Lough who also plays bass throughout and with guest guitarist Paul Hindmarsh from 300ft Gorilla, Paul contributes some spectacular electric guitar work, including the second solo on Sufferance and the first of the extended closing solos on I'm Blind. Paul and Allie provide backing vocals, with Katy contributing the beautiful guest piano performance on Find Another Way. Drums are provided by the mighty Mick Robson, Ex 300ft Gorilla, 130R

The finished album was mastered by Jon Astley at Close to the Edge Mastering and the vinyl was cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios — giving a record conceived and recorded largely outside conventional studios a suitably world-class final journey onto vinyl.

The physical edition has been designed as part of the album rather than simply as a container for it, with a gatefold sleeve, custom artwork and lyric insert. It's an album intended to be taken off the shelf, opened, read and played from beginning to end.
